Build a lesson-source inventory
Start by identifying material that has already earned its place in the teaching practice.
Useful sources include a lesson plan with a clear objective; slides or a demonstration; frequently asked student questions; an assignment that reveals a recurring misconception; a case, text, paper, or primary document; a classroom analogy that consistently helps; and feedback showing where the explanation remains weak.
For each source, write one sentence about its teaching job. "This diagram helps learners separate fixed from variable costs" is more useful than "finance slide deck."
Do not upload student records, identifiable work, or private discussion without appropriate permission and safeguards. Remove names and sensitive context before using AI tools or recording.
Choose a media job before a format
A lesson can produce several assets, but each should do one job.
Orient: explain why the topic matters and what learners should notice.
Unlock: resolve one specific confusion with an example or reframe.
Demonstrate: show a method, process, experiment, or worked problem.
Challenge: present a misconception or counterexample and ask the learner to reason.
Recap: summarize the decision rule or framework after the full lesson.
Extend: connect the lesson to a new case, current question, or deeper source.
Choosing the job prevents the common mistake of turning a 45-minute class into a clipped 45-minute monologue.
Turn sources into interview questions
A good question retrieves both subject knowledge and teaching judgment: what the subject means and how the educator helps a particular audience understand it.
Example questions include what learners usually believe before the lesson, which example changes that model, what step they try to skip, what they should be able to do after the explanation, where the analogy stops working, what an advanced learner would add, and which source someone should read next.

Record in teaching-sized units
Answer one question at a time. Keep the relevant slide, object, text, or screen nearby. Use the same language you would use with a learner, then define necessary technical terms rather than avoiding them.
A strong teaching answer often names the learner's question, gives the direct answer, shows one example, explains why the example works, states the limit, and points to practice or a deeper source.
Do not rush to sound concise during recording. A complete answer is easier to edit than a punchline missing its setup.
Create a small, durable asset set
One lesson-source session might yield a 60-second orientation clip, a misconception correction, a screen-led demonstration, a text transcript for search and review, a newsletter paragraph, a question for class discussion, and a short recap linked to the full lesson.
Not every highlight needs to become public social content. Some may work better in course onboarding, a learning-management system, office-hours follow-up, or an internal teaching library.
Use accurate titles rather than sensational hooks. "Three reasons this formula fails" should only be used if the answer actually provides three reasons and the statement is true.
Design for access and reuse
W3C's media accessibility guidance recommends captions for speech and meaningful sound, transcripts as text alternatives, and description of important visual information.
For educational media, provide accurate captions, make the transcript easy to find, describe diagrams and changes on screen, avoid color as the only distinction, link references in text, include formulas, code, or quotations in a copyable form, and identify the level and prerequisites.
A transcript also makes it easier to update an explanation later. If the evidence changes, edit or retire the asset rather than leaving an outdated clip unqualified.
Preserve evidence and uncertainty
"Source-backed" should be used carefully. In this workflow it means the recording was prepared from identifiable teaching material and the final clip can be traced to what the educator said. It does not mean REC Content Studio independently fact-checked the lesson.
Attach primary sources where factual claims require them. Distinguish settled definitions from contested interpretations. State uncertainty rather than manufacturing confidence for the camera.
The National Academies' report on science communication emphasizes that effective communication depends on the goal, audience, content, and context; simply translating jargon is not enough. That principle applies beyond science. A useful explanation is designed for a learner and a decision, not merely simplified.
When this system is the wrong tool
Do not use short clips to replace supervised practice, assess competence, or communicate high-stakes instructions that require complete context. A written guide, live session, simulation, or specialist review may be safer.
Do not force every lesson through video. Some subjects are better learned through reading, interaction, audio, diagrams, or doing.
Educator publishing checklist
Before publishing, confirm that the learning objective is explicit, the clip is connected to a real lesson source, and the asset solves one learner problem.
Check that claims, examples, and quotations are accurate; privacy and permissions are protected; captions, transcript, and visual descriptions are available; the deeper lesson or next practice is linked; and there is a plan to update the asset.
